For the fourth year in a row, Stantec has been named one of Canada’s Greenest Employers by the editors of Canada’s Top 100 Employers.
Now in its eighth year, the award recognizes employers with robust environmental programs and policies that actively involve their employees.
For this national competition, the editors of Canada’s Top 100 Employers compile and analyze data on companies that have incorporated environmental values into their corporate culture and that also attract and retain employees as a result of these environmental values.
Headquartered in Edmonton, Stantec’s North Bay office has 95 employees.
The North Bay team participates in a number of regional green initiatives including: Office waste, computer and battery recycling, carpooling and participation in the company’s Cool Commute Challenge to reduce single-vehicle use.
“To be named one of Canada’s Greenest Employers four years running shows that the environmental practices we’ve worked so hard to put in place, and the culture we work to promote, are taking hold,” says Tino DiManno, executive vice president of Stantec.
“At Stantec, our promise is to design with community in mind. Part of that promise is ensuring that we take a balanced approach to the work we do – one that takes into account economic, social and environmental values.”
To complement the sustainable design services Stantec offers to clients, the company continually takes steps to ensure that their own operations are environmentally responsible. Stantec maintains a company-wide certification to the international Organization for Standardization’s (ISO) 14001:2004 Environmental Management Systems standard.
This globally recognized standard requires an organization to identify potential environmental impacts and establish controls to minimize impacts, to monitor and communicate environmental performance and to establish a formal process for continually improving the system.
“It’s great to be recognized for our efforts, but we remain focused on getting even better,” says Lise Beutel, Stantec’s full-time senior sustainability specialist.
“For example, we’ve set targets for reducing the impacts of our operations – including energy use, GHG emissions, waste, and paper use.”
Meanwhile, more than 100 of Stantec’s offices have Sustainability Committees—voluntary groups of employees who help facilitate local greening efforts.
The company also supports many unique environmental initiatives for employees, including the promotion of sustainable transportation and encouraging employees to avoid single-occupant vehicle use in favour of alternate travel modes including transit, carpooling, biking, or walking.
