July 1st, 2011 brings about the 144th birthday of Canada and the 64th year of Canadian citizenship. To celebrate this monumental occasion, the North Bay Canada Day Committee initiated a school wide poster challenge. The theme for the fifth annual Canada Day Poster Challenge was “Canadian Pride”. The Committee invited students from area elementary schools to illustrate how people, places and events have made us proud of our nation. Kaitlynn Wilkinson, a grade four student at Tweedsmuir Public, was the winner of the fifth annual Canada Day Poster challenge. During the Canada Day opening ceremonies on July 1st, Kaitlynn’s poster will formally be presented to the public.

Registration for the annual Canada Day Road Race will start at 8:45am at the ACT Shelter and the Sailboat Regatta Registrations will start at 11:00 am at the Waterfront.

The Canada Day festivities will kick off at twelve noon at the Waterfront A.C.T. shelter with the singing of O’Canada and the official cake cutting ceremonies hosted by the Association of Canadian Travellers and the Best Western North Bay Hotel & Conference Centre.

After the opening ceremonies, the North Bay & District Multicultural Centre will host the 5th annual Multicultural Showcase. This event features an afternoon of performers highlighting the diversity of North Bay through music, song, dance, and other artistic forms. Be sure to join Discovery North Bay and their “Canada Day” displays at the grassy area in front of the Bandshell. Later in the afternoon a Uni-World Soccer Match will be held at Amelia soccer field for people ages 16+. Participants must register in advance by contacting Melissa at 705-474-3450 ext 4540.

The afternoon's agenda of events include the Canada Day Kid Zone that has a wide range of supervised sporting activities for children and, of course, the Heritage Railway Train, carousel rides and face painting. Food vendors will also be set up during the event.

New to this year’s festivities The Brian Risk Band & Friends will be performing at the Kiwanis Bandshell from 7:00pm – 9:00pm.

A Fireworks Finale sponsored by Wingate Lottery will complete the celebration at 10:00 p.m. on the North Bay waterfront. “The Moose Rocks the Boat” Fireworks cruise is scheduled to depart at 8:30 p.m. Tickets are $20.00 each and can be purchased at the Chief Ticket office on the Government Dock or by calling 705-494-8167.

“This event wouldn’t be possible without the support of our community sponsors such as Wingate Lottery & Canadian Heritage” said Erin Vaughan, Community Event Facilitator.
