Special Olympics kicks off in just over a week and organizers say everything is a go.

The Games get underway with the Opening Ceremonies at 7 p.m. on Thursday, January 29th, at the Robert Surtees Athletic Centre, Nipissing University.

The ceremony will feature the parade of athletes, several musical acts and the lighting of the Games Cauldron.

There will also be a Law Enforcement Torch Run taking place through downtown North Bay prior to the ceremony.

This will be followed by two days of sports competition – Nordic Skiing (Nordic Ski Club), Alpine Skiing (Laurentian Ski Hill), Snowshoeing (Clarion Resort), Curling (The Granite Club), Figure Skating (Memorial Gardens) and Speed Skating (West Ferris Arena).

Admission is free to the ceremonies and all 6 sports venues.

Spectators planning on heading to the Nordic Ski Club are advised that there is no parking available on site and they can take the free shuttle bus service from Northgate Shopping Centre (Sears parking lot) from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. daily on Friday and Saturday.

Athletes are competing for the opportunity to represent Ontario at the National Winter Games and the ultimate goal of participating in the World Games.
