Sixteen charges laid in Latchford shoot-out

OPP has laid charges connected to that shootout March 7 near Latchdford. One man was shot dead and an innocent bystander suffered serious head injuries in the exchange between two suspects and police.

On Sunday OPP said in a news release that Awad Khan, 23, of Hamilton, has been arrested and charged with 16 Criminal Code offences:

  • Attempt to commit murder using a firearm
  • Assault with a weapon
  • Possession of a firearm or ammunition contrary to a prohibition order
  • Resist a peace officer
  • Discharge a firearm with intent
  • Assault a peace officer
  • Firearm - use while committing an offence
  • Flight from a peace officer
  • The occupant of a motor vehicle knowing there was a firearm
  • Possession of prohibited or restricted firearm with ammo
  • Unauthorized possession of a firearm
  • Pointing a firearm
  • Escape lawful custody
  • Discharge a firearm into or at a place in a reckless manner
  • Possession of a weapon for a dangerous purpose
  • Dangerous operation

Khan remains in custody, pending his next court appearance on March 12.

The investigation is being conducted by the Temiskaming OPP Crime Unit under the direction of the OPP Criminal Investigation Branch.

On March 7, Kirkland Lake OPP tried to stop a vehicle in the area of Government Road West and Woods Street in Kirkland Lake.

The vehicle failed to stop, say police, and officers from the Kirkland Lake OPP and the Temiskaming OPP engaged in a "suspect apprehension pursuit" more commonly called a police chase.  A shelter-in-place was issued in the Latchford and surrounding area.

The OPP has also notified the SIU about this incident, and the Unit is investigating the death of a 26-year-old man and the serious injury suffered by a 76-year-old male bystander following an exchange of gunfire involving multiple OPP officers near Latchford.

Highway 11 North was closed for almost a full day while police conducted their investigation.

Police are asking that anyone with dash camera video from March 7 between 5 and 6 p.m. while driving from Kirkland Lake to Latchford via Highway 66 to Highway 11, or saw a light-colored smaller vehicle, are encouraged to contact the Temiskaming OPP Detachment at 1-888-310-1122.
