Security has been hired at Chippewa Secondary School to try and keep the homeless from attempting to sneak inside the school across from the low barrier shelter on Chippewa Street.

The school informed students and staff via an email this afternoon from Principal Wanda Hill.

"This message is to advise you that security personnel has been temporarily hired at Chippewa to keep entryways accessible before and after school," Chippewa stated in the email.

"The onset of cold weather has resulted in unsheltered people in the community attempting to stay out of the elements while they await the opening of the shelter.

"From now until the winter break, security will be onsite before and after school to ensure staff and students have unimpeded access in and out of the school."

Families are asked to continue to pick their students up from the north end of the school.

Hill says this temporary measure gives community partners time to find alternative options for users of the shelter.
