A thunder storm watch put the search for a missing swimmer from Brazil on hold for a while this afternoon but the OPP say they are heading back onto the lake to continue the search.

Around 2:45 on Sunday afternoon OPP responded to a call about a missing swimmer and found out that a 29-year-old man from Brazil had jumped off his boat about one kilometre from the shore of Callander Bay and due to powerful waves, the man went under water and never re-surfaced.

The missing man and his friend were believed to be staying at a Callander area cottage near Callander Bay.

The missing man’s friend, who was visibly distraught, didn’t want to comment on the incident to the media, but mentioned they were hoping to go out onto another boat and meet police to pinpoint the location where the man went missing.

That was around 11:30 a.m. this morning shortly before a thunderstorm warning was released by Environment Canada.

“The search is continuing,” stated OPP Constable Carolyn Ward.

“It was called off for approximately one hour due to weather, but has resumed.”

An extensive search for the swimmer was conducted by members of the Powassan OPP Detachment and North Bay OPP Marine Unit on Sunday.

That search continues today with the assistance of the OPP Underwater Search and Recovery Unit
