It was announced Thursday October 8, 2009 in Parry Sound that students from the east and west regions of the Near North District School Board will share a $60,000 grant to help fund breakfast programs at schools from MacTeir to Britt and Evergreen to Callander.

The grant was awarded by the W. Garfield Weston Foundation. The Foundation is supported by an endowment from the Weston family, with the majority of the funds being directed to specific organizations in the fields of education, land conservation, and science in Canada’s North. In addition to its ongoing commitments, the Foundation makes a number of unsolicited, Trustee Initiated Grants each year.

The money will be shared between the east and west elementary and secondary schools, by the United Church in Parry Sound, to help fund ongoing breakfast programs.

The Director of Education of the Near North District School Board, Heli Vail, states “the Board extends sincere appreciation to the W. Garfield Weston Foundation for its generous donation and to our volunteers who work so hard to deliver this important program to our students, in particular to Mary Hachigian, who was instrumental in procuring this grant.
