School Board Appoints New Superintendent

The Near North District School Board is pleased to welcome back Heli Vail as a superintendent of schools and program. Heli will be replacing Della Krieger, who is retiring after a successful career as a supervisory officer.

Heli is currently an Assistant Professor with the Faculty of Education at Nipissing University. Prior to her tenure at the university, Heli served the Near North District School Board as principal, vice-principal, teacher and consultant. In addition, Heli worked as an Education Officer with the local Ministry of Education office. She has a reading specialist and has completed her studies at the undergraduate and graduate level. Heli has a strong background in curriculum development, technology-assisted learning and leadership instruction.

Heli is well known for work in educational leadership. She has presented her research and provided keynote addresses at several national and international venues. Heli is currently a faculty advisor for Nipissing University’s Principals’ Qualifications Course and has been a committee member on the Ontario Principal’s Council.

“I am pleased to welcome Heli back to our staff and I look forward to working with her and other staff as we work toward our mission of educating learners to their fullest potential in preparation for life-long learning,” stated Colin Vickers, Director of Education.

Heli will be joining the Near North District School Board as superintendent on or about August 1, 2006. She will be sharing program and school supervision duties with Bill O’Hallarn.
