The Ministry of Transportation conducted a demonstration of the new Thibeault Hill, Highway 11 Runaway Truck Ramp Thursday and by all accounts the ramp works.

MTO officials say the demonstration is part of MTO's continuing effort to improve road safety through education, innovation and technology.

“We wanted to demonstrate to the trucking industry that they can have faith in a system that is that is dependable and reliable in all climatic weather conditions,” explains Ministry spokesperson Jeff Griffith.

“And aside from that we wanted to create footage that we can use as a public education tool to educate the commercial vehicle industry not only on how the system works and how it operates but the benefits of using the system as well.

“And certainly from our standpoint today things went off extremely well and we were very, very pleased with the results.”

Griffith says with a small number of arrest ramps in North America it is extremely important to document how the system works.

“There are about three in the entire country and there are another two in the United States so we have about 5 in North America. We have documentation on one other facility that has been utilized but aside from that nothing in a demonstration type situation like we have today, so it’s important for us to invest in the demonstrations so that we have this footage moving forward and that we can use it in an effective way to educate the commercial vehicle industry.”
