Local Rotarians will spend tomorrow buying and packing food for the needy.

Rotary International is now 117 years old and to help mark the event, Rotary clubs across the province, including North Bay, will purchase and pack 117,000 meal kits for people in need. The effort will span a total of six cities, with concurrent food-pack events planned for North Bay, Burlingon, Toronto, Belleville, Barrie, and Kingston.

The local food-pack will see approximately 50 Rotarians and friends, from several clubs throughout the region, gather at Osprey Links Golf Course, to pack over 15,000 meals in a busy afternoon session on July 5th.

The effort is in partnership with Kids Against Hunger, a Canadian food-aid charity that focuses on feeding people in need, both here in Canada and around the world.

Each meal pack contains a full day’s nutrition for six people. The food ingredients include rice, fortified vegetable protein, dehydrated vegetables, and a special blend of 21 vitamins & minerals. The food packed at this event will be shipped to communities in northern Canada as well as locations in the Philippines.

North Bay is home to two Rotary clubs and one Rotaract club with over 100 active members. In a typical year, these clubs raise over $260,000 through events like Rotary4Kids, Lobsterfest, Up The Creek Without A Paddle, Rotary Rose Day, Rotary Bingo, and other lotteries, and then donate the funds to local charities and international development projects.
