Media reports indicate that a riot broke out damaging a number of rooms and one correctional officer was allegedly taken to hospital.

The damage on the second floor is visible from well outside the aging correctional facility on Trout Lake Road and Connaught.

The incident started around 6 pm on Saturday night and lasted more than eight hours, ending around 3 a.m. on Sunday morning.

Steve White, President of OPSEU Local 616, blames a lack of funding for situations escalating like this one did.

“There’s a crisis in funding,” White told Cogeco North Bay News on Sunday.

“We have no structure in mental health funding. We have absolutely no resources to help these people because of old age, infrastructure, we need a new facility.”

White also says that nobody at the jail wants to see anyone get hurt.
