Nipissing University is pleased to welcome world renowned writer and political scientist Dr. Thomas Homer-Dixon to campus for a public lecture, titled Agents of Peace in a Time of Turmoil, on Friday March 30, at 7:30 p.m. in the Weaver Auditorium (room B200).

Homer-Dixon is director of the Pierre Elliott Trudeau Centre for Peace and Conflict Studies at the University of Toronto, and a professor in the department of Political Science at the University of Toronto. After receiving his B.A. in Political Science from Carleton University, he began graduate work in Political Science at MIT in Cambridge, Massachusetts, where he studied international relations, defence and arms control policy, and conflict theory. After completing his PhD, he moved to the University of Toronto and, in the subsequent eight years, led several international research projects examining the links between environmental stress and violence in developing countries.

Recently, his research has focused on threats to global security in the 21st century and on how societies adapt to complex economic, ecological and technological change. His work is highly interdisciplinary, drawing on political science, economics, environmental studies, geography, cognitive science, social psychology and complex systems theory.

Homer-Dixon is the author of the #1 best-seller, The Ingenuity Gap, which won the 2001 Governor General’s award for non-fiction; as well as Environment, Scarcity and Violence; and he co-edited Ecoviolence: Links among Environment, Population and Security. He twice briefed Al Gore during his tenure as Vice President of the United States.

The lecture is free of charge and open to the public. Seating is limited and must be reserved in advance. To reserve seating, please visit: http://www.nipissingu.ca/thdixon/register_thdixonevent.asp.
