By law, all motor vehicle collisions must be reported to the police if it meets the following criteria:

  • If there are any personal injuries or fatalities
  • Where damage to the vehicles is $1,000 or more
  • If there is damage to public or private property

By law every person in charge of a motor vehicle and involved in a collision meeting at least one of the above criteria’s shall report the collision to police forthwith.  If they fail to do so they can be charged with fail to report under the Highway Traffic Act (HTA) with a fine of $110 and three demerit points.

The following information is required to be provided by motorists:

  • Name
  • Driver’s licence number
  • Licence plate number
  • Insurance information
  • Name and address of the registered owner of the vehicle
  • Name of any person involved in the collision.

Being prepared for safe winter driving involves changing the way you drive during the winter months.
