The Canadian Pond Hockey Face Off Committee were thrilled to host MP and Hockey Hall of Famer Ken Dryden Thursday as they officially kicked off the 2008 program by naming Dryden Honorary Chairman for the 2008 Canadian Pond Hockey Face Off Outreach Program.

This year the committee’s outreach program will build a special team by bringing three deserving players from the Atlanta and three deserving players from the North Bay for an experience of a lifetime.

Dryden graciously accepted the honour of chair by telling the group that everyone deserves a chance and that the program offers kids just that. Click here to view BayToday.ca video

"Where kids from two different communities have a special chance and don’t ever dream of having.”

“The kids coming up from Atlanta there's a good chance they may never have heard of North Bay before. Well, they will come up here and they will experience something and they will go back to Atlanta changed in some way," he says.

"And in some ways that will effect them in one way or another the rest of their lives, and so it's not just a memory they will have coming out of here it's going to be something else. And that's terrific when you can offer the opportunity to somebody."

The Board members of the Canadian Pond Hockey Face Off are thrilled to announce that the Honourable Ken Dryden has been named as the Honourary Chairman for the 2008 Canadian Pond Hockey Face Off Outreach Program.

“We are delighted and humbled to welcome the Hon. Ken Dryden to our committee,” said Chris Dawson, Chair of Canadian Pond Hockey Face Off. “Mr. Dryden’s dedication to hockey, exemplary sportsmanship and determination to raise awareness about poverty are a natural fit to what we value.”

The goal of the Canadian Pond Hockey Outreach Program is to be global ambassadors for the game of hockey by inviting players, who otherwise wouldn’t have the opportunity, to team up with local players and allow them all the opportunity to play the game of hockey the way it all began; on a pond, with some friends, having fun!

"I have been very lucky in my life," Ken Dryden said. "I had parents, I had teachers and coaches that gave me a chance. Everybody deserves a chance. I am very pleased to be associated with a program that gives a wonderful chance to those who haven't had very many in their lives."

The 2008 Canadian Pond Hockey Outreach Program has worked closely with the Atlanta Thrashers and Low Income People Involvement of Nipissing (LIPI) to pick three deserving players from the Atlanta and three deserving players from the North Bay area for what we hope will be an experience of a lifetime.

The 2008 outreach team will be made up five players:

Lyle Hosein North Bay
Michael Brideau North Bay
Joel Courchesne North Bay
Alex Ayers Atlanta
Andrew Kristoff Atlanta
Conner Wood Atlanta

The Canadian Pond Hockey committee would like to thank the following sponsors for making the Outreach Program a great success; Lucenti, Orlando & Ellies Partners in Law, Centennial Public School, Dawstar Freelancing, Temiscaming Royals and Eurocamp.
