A spring storm, expected to bring 20-30mm of rain this weekend has prompted the North Bay-Mattawa Conservation Authority to issue another Water Conditions Statement – Flood Outlook.
“Although water levels are stable or receding at most of the gauging stations, they are still elevated and will rise with the significant rain that’s expected Saturday and Sunday,” said Katelyn Lynch, NBMCA Duty Officer.
The sun and warm temperatures (10 to 15 degrees C) that will precede this slow moving rainstorm will help evaporate some of the water content in the snow pack, however the remaining melting snow may increase the runoff from the rain.
There remains a risk of flooding in low-lying areas.
Residents, especially those in low lying areas, are encouraged to monitor the conditions as they develop. Watercourses are mostly free of ice and ice breaking away from shorelines in area lakes.
Banks adjacent to rivers and creeks are very slippery at this time and when combined with cold open water, pose a serious hazard. Parents are encouraged to keep their children and pets away from watercourses and off water bodies that have unstable ice conditions.
The outlook will be in effect until Tuesday, April 18.
