Cleanup has started after a train derailment early this morning northeast of the city near Highway 63 and Peninsula Road.

A news release from the city this afternoon says it is leading a coordinated response to the derailment of the Ontario Northland train.

The tanks, which normally transport sulphuric acid, were empty at the time of the derailment. No one was injured including two ONTC employees on the train.

As a precautionary measure, residents in three homes located in immediate proximity to the derailment were evacuated.

The clean-up response is being led by Ontario Northland Railway in coordination with the Ministry of the Environment.

Multiple agencies were notified of the derailment by the City of North Bay and are already directly involved in the response, investigation, and clean-up as per their areas of expertise including: City of North Bay, Ministry of the Environment, North Bay Fire Department, North Bay City Police, OPP,  North Bay Parry Sound District Health Unit, and Ontario Northland Railway.

“Information from assessments completed at this early stage of the investigation indicate that there is no environmental or public health risk as a result of the derailment," said Mayor Al McDonald. "The assessments will continue throughout the clean-up process.”
