Coming together with the spirit of giving, a group of dedicated ladies has donated 21 quilts, 2 afghans and 6 stuffed teddy bears to the Mattawa and Area Food Bank. It was an enjoyable project for quilters: Marie Perron, Annette Demers, Madeleine Nadon and Edna Clarke

"These quilts, along with a stuffed animal bring a lot of comfort to the owner" said Annette Demers. " It also gives comfort knowing that we helped someone in need."

The quilts come in various sizes and for various age groups. The ladies have made quilts for babies, juniors and adults. The adult quilts are approximately 60 by 72 inches. " Each quilt tells a special story," said Demers.

She explains that the large black stripes that divide the squares in this quilt ( see the photo) were made from material donated by the Sisters of Charity. "It's material from their veils," she said.

"The Sisters have been helping out the community for such a long time, we all thought it was a good time for us to help them out with the food bank," said Madeleine Nadon.

Donations of fabric have come from other members of the community. "We had yards of, denim, flannelette and cotton fabric to work with," said Nadon.

Flo Good, Sharon Monahan, Diane Fawcett, Kati Atchinson, Lynn Turcotte, Estelle Bastien, Nicole Duhaime, Pierrette Viau and Melanie Bouthilier-Viau, all donated material and did cutting for this project. Their names were included with those of the four quilters on the card that was presented along with their donation to the Mattawa and Area Food Bank.

Accepting the donation was Lise Reid, president of the Mattawa and Area Food Bank and Sr. Carmelle Laframboise.

" What a nice gesture done by these generous ladies! Their hard work in helping us keep our families warm this winter is such a gift," said Reid.

"Je suis très contente du beau travail qu'elles ont fait toute l'année pour soulager les clients que nous servons," dit Sr. Caramelle.

" We enjoy the work and enjoy being able to help out those in need," said Nadon.

It took the ladies three months to complete this project. Previous projects have included a quilt for Denis Morin, some for the victims of the Valois Drive fire last January and an angel quilt for Jackie Handspiker.
