Publication Ban

Under Section 517 sub-section 1 of the Canadian Criminal Code, the case against a well-respected community leader and teacher, Derek Burke, has had a publication order placed on it.

Burke is charged with Sexual Exploitation and Luring a Child (Internet) and was released following a bail hearing.

Colin Vickers, Director of Education for the Near North District School Board said the board cannot comment to much and is taking the lead from authorities, however, he did say the Critical Events Response Team (CERT) were onsite at W.J. Fricker to help students address the situation.

“The CERT team was available yesterday for the POD, and is available again today for staff and students and will continue to be there as long as needed.”
