Nipissing University is pleased to announce that for the second consecutive year prominent philanthropist Seymour Schulich is providing scholarships to support future math and science educators.

This year, Mr Schulich’s donation is being matched by Nipissing scholarship funds to create 100 Schulich Scholarships in Science and Education, worth $5,000 each.

The scholarships are aimed at promoting the preparation of excellent math and science educators in Nipissing’s two concurrent Science/Education programs: the integrated Bachelor of Science degree (BSc)/Bachelor of Education degree (BEd), and the capstone program where the BSc courses are completed first, followed by the BEd degree.

These awards are available to first-year students enrolling in the above programs at Nipissing in 2010. The scholarships will be awarded based on a combination of academic achievement, community contribution and financial need.

“These are vitally important scholarships for Ontario and Canada due to their ability to attract top students interested in teaching math and science,” said Sharon Rich, Dean of Education at Nipissing University. “The world needs excellent teachers who can really engage their students in these subject areas. With the aid of the Schulich Scholarships and our long history of excellence in teacher education, Nipissing University is further differentiating itself as a leader.”

“Nipissing University is deeply proud that Mr. Schulich recognizes our BEd program as being a true leader in the field and made the decision to invest in our mission,” said Lesley Lovett-Doust, Nipissing University President. “We are grateful for his continued support in the form of these Scholarships, and it is excellent that many of our exceptional students will benefit from this prestigious award.”

“I believe that the most significant thing one can do is to be important in the life of a young person. The best teachers fill that role to perfection,” said Schulich. “I am impressed by the reputation of Nipissing’s faculty of education. By offering my support to future teachers, specifically those with skills in math and science, it is my hope that those teachers will inspire their students to greatness, bringing creativity and innovation to the sciences and engineering and building the contribution of Canada to the Innovation Economy for the betterment of our country and our world.”
