Preventing falls among seniors

The Falls Prevention Community Coalition is hosting a Falls Prevention Conference for health professionals. Speakers will be discussing risk factors for falls, the role of nutrition and medications, and more. See the attached Agenda.

Most Canadians think a fall is a “normal” part of aging, but the following facts may surprise you:

• Falls are the sixth leading cause of death among older adults

• One in three older adults falls each year. One third of those who fall will experience a serious injury

• Falling is the leading cause of injury related admissions in hospitals for people over the age of 65

• 40% of admissions to nursing homes are the result of a fall.
