The current economic times have impacted everyone and everything including the fundraising efforts of the Blue Sky Habitat for Humanity crew.

The price of aluminum has dropped significantly therefore the dividends of recycling pop cans have been reduced and so for now Ellen Faulkner and the Recycling Program Committee have decided to store cans until market improves.

“A year ago in 2007 we raised $777 and this November for the same amount of cans we only got $77,” Faulkner tells BayToday.ca.

“We are still collecting the cans but we are storing them for now, and looking for people to help crush the cans as we have a storage spot and will store as many CRUSHED cans that we can till the price goes back up.”

Faulkner says it doesn’t take a lot of time to crush up the cans and she can truly use all the help she can get.

“One box of crushed cans equates to about 24 bags of cans ... it only takes me about 15 minutes to crush 2 1/2 bags.”

“Students looking for their community volunteer hours are welcome as well as boy scout troops, volunteer groups whatever ... we need help!”

Faulkner also reminds the community that the group accepts beer cans, beer bottles and liquor bottles as well.

“But remember if a magnet sticks to it we don’t take it ... it’s tin.”
