Police Board Chair says stop paying suspended cops

“When somebody gets suspended for a serious charge they shouldn’t get compensation, they shouldn’t be paid.”

Police Board Chair Dennis O’Connor doesn’t voice his opinion that often but at the end of today’s Police Board Meeting he did not hold back.

His message is to the public as he urges citizens to write letters to the province in support of opening up the police services act to allow police boards to cut off compensation for officers that are facing serious criminal charges.

“It’s getting frustrating seeing it over the last few years, it effects our budget, it effects our personnel,” admitted O’Connor during a media interview after today’s Police Board meeting.

O’Connor alluded to the Barry MacIntosh case, where a year ago then-Police Chief Paul Cook said MacIntosh was paid $312,000 while suspended since 2012.

MacIntosh was recently convicted on one of the two assault charges that he faced.

O’Connor believes letters to the government can make a change.

“Start writing letters to the government in power and say under the police services act, let’s change it,” he said.

“When somebody gets suspended for a serious charge they shouldn’t get compensation, they shouldn’t be paid.”

O’Connor suggests citizens to either forward those letters to the constituency office (MPP Vic Fedeli) or to the Ministry of Community Safety and Corrections.
