PODCAST: Larochelle's ultimate sacrifice and the origin of the Victoria Cross

The push for the Victoria Cross lives on: 'Jess Larochelle is a real Canadian hero ... Canada doesn't have the intestinal fortitude to issue its own highest award'
2021 11 30 Larochelle Victoria Cross
A campaign continues, seeking the award of the first Canadian Victoria Cross — now posthumously — to Callander native Pvt. Jess Larochelle, who died at 40 due to complications from his war wounds in summer 2023.

In the Echo Essentials Podcast clip above, Mike Harrison, a retired member of the Canadian Armed Forces who served in Afghanistan, speaks about the late Jess Larochelle, whom he calls "a real Canadian hero."

Harrison and Andrew Larochelle, the brother of Jess, join hosts Scott Clark and Dave Dale to discuss the federal government's inaction regarding the campaign by military veteran group Valour in the Presence of the Enemy to award local veteran Jess Larochelle and other military veterans the Canadian Victoria Cross, the nation's highest military honour.

Harrison made his feelings on the Victoria Cross known in a BayToday letter to the editor entitled This government is ignoring the sacrifices of our warriors.

Recorded in the North Bay Echo Community Podcast studio, this episode also revisits the ultimate sacrifice made by Jess Larochelle, who passed away at 41 due to his injuries suffered in Afghanistan last summer. The campaign for the Victoria Cross will continue despite Larochelle's death.
