Background

As a class project in Social Change for Social Justice (SWLF 3505) we have investigated the experiences of student poverty and debt.

The literature indicates that these issues shape the everyday lives of University students. This includes the institutions in which they learn, where they will live, where they will work, and what standard of living they can expect after leaving school.

These issues were explored through textual research,
interviews, surveys and focus groups with Nipissing University students in the winter of 2009. We looked at the impact of tuition, student loans and repayment, student housing options, and student employment and living expenses. As a class of nine students we worked in groups to research the above four topics and will be presenting on these areas. Our final project includes the launch of an interactive website that will disseminate our research on issues of student poverty and debt. Along with this we have prepared a class paper which includes discussions of these topics and recommendations for policy changes that have been presented and distributed to various interest groups and government organizations. Our multi-faceted approach is what we think is necessary to most effectively combat this complex issue.

Through this project we hope to achieve dynamic social change to end student poverty.
