A decision on the fate of North Bay's low barrier 24-hour emergency homeless shelter at Pete Palangio arena has been delayed until early next week.

North Bay city councillor Dave Mendicino is the chair of Nipissing District Housing Corporation and a board member with District of Nipissing Social Services Administration Board (DSSAB), told BayToday that the topic was a key discussion point during Wednesday's DSSAB board meeting.

"The Board did not make any decisions yesterday," stated Mendicino in a text to BayToday.

"We have asked staff for more info and we will meet again next week. Lots of moving parts, it is a complex issue."

The homeless shelter was moved to Pete Palangio arena back in mid-April. The twin-pad arena was one of many city facilities that were shut down due to the COVID-19 pandemic.

Funding for the facility ends at the end of June but officials say it will still stay open until July 6 regardless of what direction they take.

Mendicino anticipates a decision will come during another meeting set for Monday.
