Buoyed by the success of last year’s introduction of the MOTION health video competition, teens employed by the Health Unit’s Youth Action Alliance have launched the project in area schools once again this year. MOTION is a youth-led project designed to educate teens about the importance of healthy living through the creation of videos and a gala showcase event.

“I am really excited about Motion 2010 because it gives us a chance to show that we can do something positive on a large scale!” says Vanessa Robinson, Parry Sound Peer Leader.

MOTION 2010 was launched recently in secondary schools throughout the North Bay Parry Sound district. While the final deadline for video submissions is late in February, students who have their videos ready early may submit them by January 20th and their name will be entered in a draw to win special Early Bird prizes! Students are encouraged to form teams to create short videos in one of the three categories:

Poverty & Hidden Hunger
Body Image & Healthy Weights
Sexual Health.

“Teens listen to other teens more than they listen to adults.” says Dr. Chirico, Medical Officer of Health at the North Bay Parry Sound District Health Unit. “This project promotes peer education through a creative outlet, so it’s a great way for youth to create change in the lifestyles of teenagers! This is a key element to lifelong healthy living.”

The final deadline for video submissions is February 26th. Motion 2010 collection boxes are located in the main offices of all the secondary schools in the district. All videos are showcased and the winning videos are announced during the MOTION 2010 red carpet gala awards ceremony which takes place in April at the Capitol Center in North Bay. The MOTION 2010 awards event sees students dressed in formal finery while enjoying live music and entertainment, refreshments, dignitary involvement and paparazzi. Top student video producers and their respective schools are acknowledged with trophies and cash prizes.
