A pair of U13 hockey teams are taking part in the Northern Ontario Classic on Wednesday night at the Bill Barber Complex in Callander.

The U13A North Bay Trappers and the U13A East Nipissing Vipers are playing a charity event looking to raise funds for Ronald McDonald House Charities and the Salvation Army Food Bank/School Snack Program.

The Ronald McDonald House Charities hit close to home for the Kmith family which knows how important those facilities are.

"For over a year, our family lived at the Ronald McDonald House in Ottawa while our daughter Jillian received cancer treatment," the Kmith's stated in a release.

"It truly is a special place. Families living with a child going through life-saving treatment at CHEO can laugh, grow, eat, fall apart, and support each other during these very difficult times. There is no break from treatment, so having a home away from home to celebrate holidays and family traditions is key to surviving these health challenges."

The Kmith's say the House is currently under expansion and these funds are needed.

"Hockey has also been a safety net of friends for ourselves and our children; so for this group to choose RMHC as a recipient of funds for our event is a reflection of your kindness and consideration for us and other families in our community who rely on RMHC," they said.

"I know our kids will grow in compassion and empathy through this event and we are immeasurably grateful and humbled."

The puck drop for the Northern Ontario Classic is set for 7 p.m.

Organizers say the event will have great prizes to be won, food available from your local Beaver Tails and Coffee/Hot Chocolate available. The silent auction will include an official Team Canada hockey stick signed by Ty Nelson and a signed North Bay Battalion jersey.
