Ottawa area man arrested and charged in New Year's party murder

Following an argument, the attacker brandished what police believe was "an edged weapon" stabbing the victim.

Police have charged a man they believe is responsible for a New Year's murder in North Bay.

Shortly after 2:30 a.m. Friday, North Bay Police and Nipissing Paramedic Services responded to a location on the 1100 block of Jane Street regarding a person in need of medical help.

Police found the victim on the side of Jane Street, next to a snowbank. He was rushed by ambulance to the North Bay Regional Health Centre where he was pronounced dead.

Police released few details in a news release this morning but said an argument turned violent when a man assaulted two adult females then left a party at a Gormanville St. home. Gormanville intersects Jane St.

Reliable sources tell BayToday that a 17-year-old woman was being beaten up by her boyfriend at the party when several women and the victim tried to intervene. During the fight, the women sustained substantial injuries requiring hospital treatment.

After leaving the Gormanville St. party the man began walking on Jane Street where he again met the victim. Following an argument, the attacker brandished what police believe was "an edged weapon" and stabbed the victim.

That morning, a witness told BayToday, police were going from house to house in the crime scene asking residents for any surveillance video, and searching in snowbanks and under cars looking for evidence. A canine unit and drone was also deployed.

As a result of the investigation police have arrested and charged Ghislain Nsengiyumva, 20, from Orleans Ontario with;

  • Second degree murder
  • Utter a threat to cause death
  • Assault with a weapon
  • Two counts of assault.

Nsengiyumva remains in custody pending a bail hearing at the North Bay Courthouse.

Police have not yet named the victim although it is being widely circulated on social media.

The North Bay Police Criminal Investigation Section is leading the investigation with the assistance of the North Bay Police Forensic Identification Unit and front line officers.

The investigation was also helped by the OPP with the use of their Canine Unit and their drone.

The investigation continues, and spokesman John Schultz says police will not comment further on the case. "At this point with the investigation on going, I cannot respond to any inquiries."

Anyone with information that may assist police with this investigation is asked to call the North Bay Police Service at 705-497-5555.
