OPP want everyone to have a safe and enjoyable boating season as Safe Boating Week wraps up this weekend.

The Marine Unit will be patrolling the waterways to ensure boaters are in compliance with the vessel regulations.

"On those beautiful sunny days, most of us want to get out on the water to use our boat," says a news release. "Just remember that any vessel being underway that has any type of motor, requires the operator to possess a valid Pleasure Craft Operators Card or proof of competency equivalence.

Five key points to remember are:

  • WEAR a PFD or lifejacket
  • Boat sober
  • Take a boating course
  • Be prepared, both you and your vessel
  • Be wary of the dangers of cold water immersion

Remember, impaired operation on the water carries the same fines and penalties as on the highway so no drinking and boating.

"Help keep our waterways safe for everyone."
