In the early morning hours of Sunday, September 3, 2006, a 16-year-old female was fatally stabbed while attending a house party in Fort Albany, Ontario.

The Criminal Investigation Branch (CIB) of the Ontario Provincial Police was requested to assist the Nishnawbe-Aski Police Service with the reported homicide investigation.

On the date of the incident a 15-year-old female was arrested in connection with the death of the Fort Albany resident.

In accordance with the Youth Criminal Justice Act, the names of the victim and the accused are not being released.

As a result of further investigation and consultation with the Ministry of the Attorney General, the initial charge of second-degree murder has been increased to first-degree murder and the additional charges of assault with a weapon (relating to separate victims) and weapons dangerous have been laid.

The accused is scheduled to appear in a Timmins court on Monday, September 18, 2006.

Nishnawbe-Aski Police Service will be continuing the investigation with the assistance of the Ontario Provincial Police under the direction of Detective Inspector Ken Leppert, Criminal Investigation Branch.
