OPP report 'troubling trend' on Highway 17

Renfrew OPP and community members have witnessed vehicles travelling at alarming speeds

Renfrew OPP, the OPP Highway Safety Division and the Ministry of Transportation are worried about a "troubling trend" during a joint traffic initiative on Highway 17 between Renfrew and Arnprior this past weekend.

The initiative was conducted between March 8-10, and officers witnessed vehicles travelling at "alarming speeds" at other times as well.

Over the weekend, Renfrew OPP joined forces with the MTO to help put a stop to dangerous driving behaviours.

The results:

Charges - 53 Total:

  • Speeding: 39
  • Stunt Driving: 3 (speeds of 152km/h, 168km/h, & 171km/h)
  • No Insurance: 2
  • Suspended Driver: 2
  • Breach of POA Probation: 1
  • Drive No Licence: 1
  • Class G1 Licence Holder Unaccompanied: 1
  • No Muffler: 1
  • No Documents / Permit: 2

Warnings - 10 Total:

  • Speeding: 4
  • Following Too Closely: 1
  • Documents: 5

Other Notable:

  • 3 vehicles impounded.
  • Two Level 2 CVSA inspections completed.
  • Suspected stolen vehicle successfully stopped with a rolling block.
  • 750 contraband cigarettes seized.
