OPP release more information on fatal collision

On July 10, 2015 at approximately 10:25 p.m., Sudbury OPP responded to a fatal motor vehicle collision on Highway 17 in Greater Sudbury.

East of Sleepy Hollow Road, a westbound sports utility vehicle (SUV) with two occupants struck a moose, then was involved in a head on collision with an oncoming eastbound automobile.

The driver of the SUV, Joseph SCHOFIELD, 67, of Cutler was pronounced deceased at the scene. 

The passenger, Marella SCHOFIELD, 67, of Cutler was treated for non-life threatening injuries.  The driver of the automobile, Srinivasu MURUKONDA, 27, of Mississauga was treated for non-life threatening injuries. 

Highway 17 was opened in both directions on July 11, 2015 at 5:19 a.m.  The investigation is ongoing.

The OPP would like to remind motorists that moose (wildlife) are unpredictable.  Be sure to follow the speed limit and reduce your speed in darkness, rain, and fog.   

Continually scan shoulders of the highway so animals may be spotted.   Watch for the yellow wildlife warning signs that indicate areas of increased risk and slow down.  

Stop as safely as possible if a wild animal is crossing the road and remember that other animals may follow.
