OPP Media Release

The traffic safety message this Canada Weekend is very simple and straight to the point – SPEED KILLS, SLOW DOWN! Over the last few weeks, North East Region OPP has responded to a number of violent, multi-vehicle crashes that have left many people dead and many more injured. Aggressive driving behaviour, mostly speeding, was often the cause.

Although provincial statistics show that the Canada Day Weekend has more fatal and serious injury collisions than any other holiday weekend, the North East Region OPP recorded a fatality free Canada Day Weekend in 2005.

“Our enforcement objective is to slow drivers down”, explains Inspector Mark Andrews, Unit Commander North East Region Traffic and Marine. “Research indicates a clear relationship between speed and collision severity. In other words, the faster you travel the greater the crash impact.”

Excessive Speed Penalties
Effective March 31st, 2006, new legislation came into effect to provide speeders with higher fines in some penalty ranges.

19 km/hr over = $57 and 3 demerit points

29 km/hr over = $130.50 and 3 demerit points

34 km/hr over = $238 and 4 demerit points

49 km/hr over = $343 and 4 demerit points

50 km/hr over = $487.50 and 6 demerit points
