OPP investigation in wake of traffic stop leads to more charges

Among multiple other charges, the accused faces eight counts of failing to comply with a probation order and was held in custody

MATTAWA, Ont — The OPP says its follow-up on a traffic stop led to the recovery of the stolen vehicle and several charges for the involved driver.

On March 18, shortly after 5 p.m., members of the North Bay Detachment of the Ontario Provincial Police responded to a traffic complaint on Highway 17 in Papineau-Cameron Township. The vehicle was located, and the driver was charged for driving with no licence.  

On March 19, while conducting some follow-up regarding the previous day's traffic stop, the OPP was advised that the involved vehicle had been reported stolen from Hamilton. The vehicle was towed back to the North Bay OPP Detachment for further investigation.

As a result of the investigation Keighan Montieth-Bethune, a 38-year-old from Hamilton was arrested and charged with the following:

  • Obstruct a peace officer
  • Possession of property obtained by crime - over $5000
  • Mischief - obstructs, interrupts, or interferes with the lawful use, enjoyment, or operation of property
  • Fail to comply with probation order - eight counts
  • Operation of motor vehicle while prohibited under the Criminal Code - two counts

The accused was held in custody and is set to appear before the Ontario Court of Justice in North Bay on March 21.
