The opening of the new Almaguin Highlands Secondary School is a great news story for the Near North District School Board and the communities of the Almaguin Highlands region.
To ensure proper completion and safety of the students and staff, the opening of AHSS will be delayed one week, with orientation to the school beginning Tuesday, September 13th. Parents and students will be contacted with further information during the week of September 6th.

In addition to safety issues, Principal Lisa O’Kane and Superintendent of Schools Terry Blair have worked hard to ensure a process that allows our students to meet the required number of hours in the school year to successfully complete their credits.

“We want the school to be ready for our students. There will still be some minor areas that require some finishing, such as the gymnasium floor, the possibility of fine-tuning one of our shop areas and alternative servery preparations in our cafeteria for a week or two but program options are being put together so our students don’t lose any of their instructional time. Staff are excited about the new school and their support and enthusiasm, along with that of parents and students, will make the transition as smooth as possible,” said Interim Acting Director of Education Paul Moffat.

The Near North District School Board would like to thank all families and staff for their cooperation and patience in helping to make this brief delay manageable. With your help and support, we look forward to the opening of the Near North District School Board’s newest school.
