North Bay Fire & Emergency Services – April 24, 2008: With spring weather finally here, many homeowners are cleaning up their yards and properties. As a result, North Bay Fire and Emergency Services are receiving numerous requests for Open Air Burning Permits. We remind you that anyone in the urban, built up area of the City is prohibited from burning. These restrictions on open-air burning also apply to outdoor wood burning appliances such as chimineas and outdoor fireplaces. Propane or charcoal fueled appliances are permitted.

Anyone in the outlying, more rural areas of the city may be approved for open burning provided a permit is obtained and all fire safety regulations are practiced:

• Fires must be small, less than one cubic metre in size.

• Only clean, dry wood or wood products may be burned.

• Fires must be attended to at all times.

• Have on hand equipment to extinguish the fire if necessary.

• Do not burn when wind conditions may cause smoke to be a nuisance to your neighbours.

• The dispatch office must be notified each time you light a fire.

If complaints are received about excessive smoke or the size of a fire, North Bay Fire & Emergency Services will respond with a fire crew and you will be asked to extinguish the fire and could result in your permit being cancelled. You may also be liable to a fine.

As per By-law 2007-116 the cost for a Residential Burning Permit is:

• $15.00 per week

• $75.00 per year

For more information or to obtain an Open Air Burning Permit please call the Fire Prevention and Life Safety Division office at 474-0626 ext. 834 or visit us at Fire Station 1, 119 Princess St. West (Victoria St. entrance).
