Ontario reports 3,009 new COVID cases Saturday and 3,089 cases Friday

Public Health Ontario released two daily updates today following the Good Friday holiday

Public Health Ontario reported 3,009 new lab-confirmed COVID-19 cases in today's update as well as 3,089 cases for yesterday's update. 

The province published both reports today due to the Good Friday holiday.

There were 39 new deaths reported over the last two days (23 in Friday's update and 16 today). 

The Friday update includes 1,925 recoveries and Saturday's report includes 1,819 recoveries. 

The province has reported 190 new hospitalizations since Thursday, and 36 new admissions of COVID-19 patients to intensive care units.

The April 3 update provided by the province's public health agency also reported the following data:

  • 23,190 active cases, which is up from 22,016 yesterday
  • 796 people are currently hospitalized with COVID-19 in Ontario, down from 1,162 reported yesterday. 
  • There are 451 COVID patients in intensive care units (up from 435 yesterday) and 261 COVID patients on ventilators (down from 271 reported yesterday).
  • The province reported 59,117 tests were processed for today's update with a five per cent positivity rate.
  • There were 62,333 tests processed for Friday's update, with a 4.6 per cent positivity rate.
  •  Another 25,049 tests are still under investigation and/or being processed. To date, 12.7 million tests have been completed.

Variants of concern (Ontario-wide)

  • 2,042 lab-confirmed cases of the UK variant strain of COVID-19 (B.1.1.7). 
  • 70 cases of B.1.351 (also known as the South African variant).
  • 102 cases of P.1, which is the variant strain that originated in Brazil. 
  • Another 24,459 cases have screened positive with a mutation detected, but the lineage for the variant strain not yet sequenced.
  • According to Public Health Ontario, there are delays between specimen collection and the testing required to confirm a variant of concern. As such, the reports can change and can differ from past case counts publicly reported.

Vaccines

  • There were  59,567 doses of vaccines against COVID-19 administered on April 2
  • As of 6 p.m. on April 2, the province reported 2,424,063 doses of vaccine against COVID-19 have been administered.
  • In total, 321,469 people have been fully vaccinated.

Public Health Ontario has confirmed 358,558 cases of COVID-19 since the start of the pandemic, and reported 327,940 recoveries and 7,428 deaths, of which 3,901 were individuals living in long-term care facilities.

The cumulative average incidence rate in the province is 2,412 cases per 100,000 people in Ontario.

The weekly incidence rate in Ontario is 108.6 cases per 100,000 people, which is an increase of 27.2 per cent from last week (March 24-30).

The provincial government has initiated a 28-day shutdown starting today for all of Ontario. The rules for the shutdown can be found here.

The province will not be releasing a daily update tomorrow (April 4), and will publish both the April 4 and April 5 report on Monday, April 5.
