Starting today you can help choose a winning photograph in each category in Living Lakes Canada’s 3rd annual Lake Biodiversity Photo Challenge.
Throughout Lakes Appreciation Month, people submitted images that celebrate the beauty of lakes across Canada and raise awareness about what’s threatening their biodiversity. Hundreds of entries have poured in from coast to coast — almost 500 impactful photos now fill the online gallery, breaking last year’s record of 245 entries.
Visit the 2023 online gallery and follow the instructions to cast your votes. Online voting will run all month long until Aug. 30.
The public favourites will be announced in early September along with the judges’ favourites selected by a judging panel made up of Living Lakes Canada team members and prize sponsors. All the winners will receive generous prize packs courtesy of our partners: Lush Cosmetics, Kicking Horse Coffee, Teadore Co, Earth Rangers, Laykhaus and Float-Eh.
The Lake Biodiversity Photo Challenge is the sister event to the National Lake Blitz, a cross-Canada citizen science program. For the 2023 Lake Blitz, 442 volunteers signed up to monitor 273 lakes in nine provinces and one territory. Participants were mailed easy-to-use kits and instructions to monitor their chosen lake twice a month from May to September.
To find out if a lake near you is being monitored, visit the interactive Lake Observation Map and type your hometown or nearest lake into the search bar. To learn more and to get involved in 2024, visit lakeblitz.
The Lake Biodiversity Photo Challenge and National Lake Blitz are made possible with funding from the RBC Tech for Nature grant.
