Omischl receives Queen’s Diamond Jubilee medal

Nipissing MPP Vic Fedeli made his final Queen’s Diamond Jubilee medal presentation Friday to four-time World Champion aerialist Steve Omischl.


Omischl, a North Bay native, received his medal in a ceremony at Laurentian Ski Hill, the place where he developed his talent during his youth.


“Steve’s accomplishments have inspired us all over the years, and this honour is truly fitting for him,” said Fedeli. “It’s very pleasing to see the community nominated him.”


Omischl won four overall World Cup freestyle skiing aerials titles, finishing atop the standings in 2004, 2007, 2008 and 2009. In a dozen seasons, he placed on the podium at 40 World Cup events, and claimed 20 titles. He won four medals at the World Championships, including gold in 2005 and silver in 2009.


Steve also competed in three Winter Olympics for Canada, finishing 8th in the 2010 Games in Vancouver. Omischl has now taken on a coaching role with Canada’s national team and recently had North Bay’s new sports complex on Lakeshore Drive named in his honour.


This was the final medal presentation of 14 Fedeli has made over the past year. Other recipients were Vala Monestime-Belter, Hannah Bywater, (HCol) John Cutsey, Chris Dawson, Constable Jody DeHaas, Doris Evans, Sharon Fung, (HMajor) Ted King, Hariett Madigan, Jim Marmino, Wayne Reid, Kayvan Rouhani and Dick Tafel.


The Diamond Jubilee Medal is a commemorative medal created to mark the 2012 celebrations of the 60th anniversary of the accession of Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth II to the Throne and as a way to honour significant contributions and achievements by Canadians.
