Illinois Senator Barack Obama standing on the steps of the Old State Capitol in Springfield, Illinois formally announced he will seek the 2008 Democratic nomination for president.
If elected Obama, the son of a white American woman and a black Kenyan man, would be the first African-American U.S. president.
He is also viewed as Hillary Clinton's chief rival.
