Today Premier Dalton McGuinty appointed the Honourable Monique Smith, MPP for Nipissing, as the new Government House Leader. Smith, who was formerly the Deputy House Leader, adds this new role to her responsibilities as Minister of Tourism.

"Monique has been a passionate and effective representative of the North and North Bay families at the Cabinet table," said Premier Dalton McGuinty in making the announcement. "So I am particularly pleased to make even more use of her talents as she takes on the responsibility of Government House Leader, where she will help steer our government's legislative agenda."

I am both proud and humbled to have been given this role by Premier McGuinty. I take it on with great enthusiasm.” said MPP Smith. “As we move into the new session in a few weeks time, I look forward to building on the positive relationships that I established with my colleagues on all sides of the Legislature during my time as Deputy House Leader.”

With this appointment, MPP Smith takes over duties from former Government House Leader, Economic Development Minister Michael Bryant. As part of the same announcement, Minister of Aboriginal Affairs Brad Duguid was named Deputy Government House Leader.
