Northern rider wins big at Stampede

A Northern Ontario rodeo star "rocked it" at the famous Calgary Stampede this weekend winning the tie down roping and splitting second and third in the steer wrestling at this years Calgary Stampede. 

Grant won $100,000 for winning the tiedown roping and $20,000 for winning second and third in the steer wrestling.

Grant was born in New Liskeard and started riding ponies on the farm at the age of three.

"I competed at the TPHC shows and fall fair when I was three and every year after till we moved to Granton, Ontario after I finished grade 3," he told BayToday.

"After we moved south, I began junior barrel racing at the Ontario rodeos. At the age of 11, I started to rope and began steer wrestling when I was 13."

The cowboy is now 25 years old and has been roping calves for 14 years.

"I spend most of my summers in Alberta rodeoing and my winters in Texas, but I will always think of Ontario as my home," he added.

When Grant recceived his giant, oversized check he compred it to winning the Stanley Cup.

"A special memory, when I was up on the stage with Ron MacLean and realized that I had achieved one of my lifelong goals of winning the Calgary Stampede."
