North Bay's Colton Point shuts out Slovakia at World Juniors

"We haven't mentioned Colton Point very much tonight but he's made two or three real good saves and looks really steady in goal," stated colour man Ray Ferraro.

North Bay's Colton Point threw a 20 save shutout at the World Juniors tournament this evening as Team Canada beat Slovakia 6-0.

The win gives Canada a record of 2-0.

The six-foot-three, 220-pound Point wasn't tested often but came up big when he had to.

"He did the job for sure," coach Dominique Ducharme told TSN during a post-game interview. "We can't ask more than that. He was solid every time he faced a shot  Sometimes you need to go to the other goalie and he did a great job."

Ducharme said that he used Point to give goalie Carter Hart, who made 29 saves in Tuesday's 4-2 win over Finland a rest and also to give Point some game time experience in case he is called on later in the tournament.

"We need him to get ready and we play four games in five nights so we need to manage the rest."

Point also drew praise from the TSN announcers.

"We haven't mentioned Colton Point very much tonight but he's made two or three real good saves and looks really steady in goal," stated colour man Ray Ferraro.

"He was pretty pumped with the new pads he got to wear, said he thought of (Canadiens goalie) Carey Price when he got to design them and Price had the dark pads when playing for Canada as well. But Point was such a late OHL pick he had to go back to Jr. A, there was no place for him to go and so he was actually drafted out of Jr. A by the Dallas Stars in the fifth round."

Point played for the Carleton Place Canadians of the Central Canada Hockey League.

He was called "another late bloomer" by play by play announcer Gord Miller.

Canada's next game is an outdoor one Friday at 2 p.m.against Team USA. It will be carried live on TSN.
