The Weather Network is predicting it will be a good summer for North Bayites.
It comes after an unusual start to spring, where above average conditions in March were countered by a large dump of snow and a month of April many of us would soon forget in the region.
“It’s impossible to make everybody happy with the weather but I think the summer is going to try to make as many people happy as possible,” said Doug Gilham, a Meteorologist with Canada’s Weather Network.
“We are calling for a warmer than normal summer but not an excessively hot summer but we don’t think it will be well above normal. It will not be remembered as a top 10 hot summer which probably makes some people unhappy.”
Gilham says they predict a normal amount of precipitation in the summer months. However he expects there to be some periods of dry conditions but nothing too extreme.
Gilham notes that coming up with an accurate seasonal forecast has been tough.
“It was a challenge to forecast because in a transition from strong El Nino to a strong La Nina, so when you have such a major transition going on the timing of that can get tricky and the details of what that looks like can be tricky but we won’t start to really feel the effects of La Nina until the fall and winter,” he said.
“You’ve still got a lot of warm water in the pacific and Atlantic oceans on both sides of the continent and the residual heat from the strong El Nino and typically La Nina’s are associated with warmer summers in Southern and Central Ontario.”
Gilham says North Bayites should still expect some back and forth swings in temperature, especially in June.
“The focus of the warmer weather will be the second half of summer relative to normal. The more consistent warmth will be in the second half of the summer and expect cooler conditions but a warm weekend.”
