On Saturday, November 24 2007, the FIRST Lego League Robotics team “Under Pressure” captured the Robot Performance Award and the Ontario Power Generation Champion’s Award at the Northern Ontario Regional Qualifying Tournament at Science North in Sudbury. Under Pressure will now advance to the FLL Ontario Provincial Championship to be held in Oakville on Saturday, December 8, 2007.

Under Pressure is a team of seven North Bay and Area students aged 10 to 13 in Grades 5 to 9. The team is comprised of students from Centennial, Vincent Massey, and W.J. Fricker Public Schools, John XXIII, and two of the members are home schooled. Four of the members are returning veterans from last year’s Northern Ontario Regional Championship squad and three are rookies.

F.I.R.S.T. Lego League is an international program that combines a hands-on interactive robotics program with a sports like atmosphere. Each September a new Challenge is unveiled to teams around the world. Over the next few weeks they design, build, and program a fully autonomous robot made of Lego to complete the missions set out in the challenge. The challenge theme for 2007 is Power Puzzle – understanding the elements of energy use in a world that uses more and more energy every day. Energy choices, energy use, and alternative energy sources are the main focus.

Under Pressure is sponsored by Nipissing University and the team received a great deal of support from Nipissing for the FLL program. In particular, the staff of Facility Services and the Athletic Centre provided aid and guidance for the team’s research project.
