North Bay City Councillor Dave Mendicino was elected as the new Chair of the North Bay-Mattawa Conservation Authority (NBMCA) at its Annual Meeting Wednesday.

In accepting the Chair position, Mendicino acknowledged the leadership of Marc Charron who Chaired the NBMCA Board of Directors for the past six years. Charron, who chose not to seek re-election as Chair, remains on the Board as a citizen appointment by the City of North Bay.

"Marc's leadership proved to be valuable in the negotiations and discussions that lead to the stabilization of the Conservation Authority these past six years. We are grateful for the significant contribution he has made," said Mendicino.

As Chair, Mendicino will be responsible for leading the NBMCA's Board of Directors and the Finance and Administration Advisory Board for the duration of 2010. Heather Busch was elected as Vice Chair of the Board.

"The experience and strength of the NBMCA's Board of Directors will be a definite asset as we navigate the year ahead," comments Brian Tayler, NBMCA's General Manager. NBMCA has some ambitious goals for 2010 as we continue to balance human needs with environmental needs through quality watershed-based programs and services."

The remaining members of the Board of Directors are representatives of the NBMCA's 10 member municipalities. George Thompson (Powassan) was elected as Chair of the Land Conservation and Recreation Management Advisory Board with Cecil Reid (Chisholm) as Vice Chair. Dan Corbeil (East Ferris) was elected as the Chair of the Water & Related Land Management Advisory Board with Danielle Albright (Calvin ) elected to the role of Vice-Chair. The two advisory boards act as an advisory and public appeal board for any regulatory decisions made by the NBMCA. In addition, the six members of the Finance and Administration Advisory Board are historically comprised of the Chair and Vice-Chair of each Advisory Board and the Board of Directors. Other Board members include Lorne Mick (Mattawa), Conrad Blake (Mattawan), Mac Bain (North Bay) and Alvina Neault (Papineau-Cameron).

Heather Busch (Callander), Cecil Reid (Chisholm) and Yvon Foisy (Bonfield) were re-elected to the Board of Directors of the Foster Wild Environmental Fund, the NBMCA's fundraising arm.

The North Bay-Mattawa Conservation Authority (NBMCA) was founded in 1972 by the Province of Ontario and the NBMCA's 10 member municipalities. A non-profit organization, the NBMCA works closely with the public to balance human needs with the environmental needs of the region's watershed. The NBMCA is one of 36 Conservation Authorities who are members of Conservation Ontario.
