The 2023 Student Humorous Short Story Competition is open and offers cash prizes of $1,000, $700 and $300.

Ontario students are encouraged by the organization that awards the Leacock Medal for Humour to submit an original humorous story or humorous personal essay in English and seize their opportunity to be lauded alongside luminaries such as Amy Ghobrial of Richmond Hill.

Ghobrial's Any Title Will Do, It’s Simply Rubbish was named the winner of the 2022 Student Humorous Short Story Competition. See more prize-winning submissions here.

Students aged 14 to 19 in public, separate, private, home school, university or college situations across Ontario are invited to enter their Student Humorous Story Competition. Each year, cash prizes of $1,000, $700 and $300 are offered for the three best stories or memoirs.

Winners will attend a “Meet the Authors” event in Orillia on Friday, September 15 to receive their awards and to have the opportunity to meet the finalist authors for the 2023 Leacock Medal for Humour and other authors, some of whom were finalists in past years.

The first prize winner will also receive tickets and accommodation to attend the Gala Dinner on Saturday, September 16, at which the winner of the 2023 Leacock Medal will be announced.  Last year, the winning students were able to meet Canadian comedy icons Rick Mercer and Mark Critch in addition to many other authors who were in attendance.

Entries may be submitted online or by regular mail, before the deadline of June 15, 2023. The awards are sponsored by the Dunkley Charitable Foundation. Full details may be found here.
