No deal: City won't buy property next to Gathering Place

In August 2023, North Bay City Council approved up to $310,000 for the property and related purchase costs

The City of North Bay will not purchase a Cassells St. property neighbouring the Gathering Place after all.

North Bay City Council approved the purchase of the property at 1183 Cassells St. following an in-camera session at the tail end of its regular meeting on August 8, 2023.

"The City's purchase of the property at 1183 Cassells St. was never finalized, and it is no longer pursuing it as a strategic acquisition," Communications Officer Gord Young confirms.

In August 2023, the City categorized the potential purchase as "part of the strategy to address community safety and well-being priorities." The plan then was a collaboration with "various community partners to develop a business case for the effective use of the property."

The commercial property is to the left in the above photo, located on Cassells between King Street West and Seventh Avenue. The property remains on the market.

Last August, council approved up to $310,000 for the purchase price and related purchase costs. The funds were to be drawn from the City's Property Development Reserve Fund 99535R.

Despite the purchase not working out, Young adds, "The City will continue to explore opportunities to address community safety and well-being priorities and remains committed to collaborating with community partners in this regard."
