NipU's Salzman joins Man in Motion tour today

Nipissing University’s own man in motion, Kevin Salzman, will be lending a hand this week as a medal-bearer for the Rick Hansen Relay as it passes through Sudbury on Thursday to commemorate the 25th anniversary of Hansen’s famous Man in Motion Tour.

He will be carrying the Rick Hansen Medal for about 250 metres along Notre Dame Avenue, starting at 840 Notre Dame Avenue at 10:38 a.m. He will be one of 7,000 medal-bearers across Canada.

Salzman is also gearing up for his own Wheel Across Canada tour to raise awareness for Cerebral Palsy. He has been training hard for the past year, with an eye to set out on his coast-to-coast journey next Spring. He is currently raising funds to assist with the costs of the wheelchairs needed to cover the 50 km daily grind that the cross-Canada trip will require.

Nipissing recently held a fundraising hockey game between faculty and fourth-year Bachelor of Physical Health and Education students that raised $420 for Salzman’s cause.

Diagnosed with Cerebral Palsy at a young age, Salzman has been in a wheelchair for most of his life. Perseverance is his middle name; nothing gets him down. He’s given many inspirational speeches in North Bay and Bracebridge, and travelled to the University of California Los Angeles for a speech last year.

A recipient of a 2009 Dave Marshall Leadership Award in 2009, Salzman graduated with an English degree last June. He is currently working on a degree in Gender Equality and Social Justice.
