Nipissing University is proud to be hosting a Children’s Rights Symposium on October 24. The event is in partnership with Unisex’s Canada as part of Unisex’s A Canada Fit For Children in a World Fit for Children campaign.

Dr. Tom Waldock will deliver a keynote address, entitled To be Seen and Heard: Children’s Rights, Child Welfare and Canada’s Commitment to the U.N. Convention on the Rights of the Child. Waldock, a professor at Nipissing University’s Muskoka Campus, has been actively involved in child welfare for 20 years, advocating for youth in care in various capacities, and notably as a caregiver himself. He has published his work on caregiving (foster care), systems of care, children’s rights and child welfare.

Andre Cazabon will also deliver a keynote address, which includes a visual presentation. Cazabon is a Gemini-nominated film-maker and winner of the best socio-political documentary of 2006 at the Golden Sheaf Awards for her film, Wards of the Crown.

The event also includes an introduction from Unicef Canada on the UN Special Session on Children (2002), its outcome document, A World Fit for Children, and some background to the pan-Canadian Lecture Series. It will conclude with a participatory discussion forum.

The symposium takes place from 3:30 - 6:00 p.m. in the Nipissing University Theatre (room F213). All are welcome to attend. Admission is free; however, seating is limited and the university asks interested individuals to register their attendance in advance. Anyone interested in attending should register at www.nipissingu.ca/unicef.
